Meetings are a treasure trove of information about both the instant topic of discussion and a great deal more. Unfortunately, traditional meeting management techniques spend most of their time optimizing relatively minor elements of meetings (i.e., how to do agendas, minutes, and facilitation, etc.) and fail to address important conditioning factors such as relationships, roles, and the decision making process that can tell you far more about what is going on in the meeting than what is actually said.
As this is the first of several meeting management videocasts, what we intend to do here is give you a broader appreciation for the dynamic of meetings so that, as you go through our follow-on classes, you can develop mastery in navigating the meeting environment. In this vcast we will examine the relationship between meetings and decision making, identify the four types of coordination meetings that will comprise 90% of the meetings you attend, and then drill down on Problem Resolution meetings which will be the most intriguing and aggravating meetings you attend. We will then explore the the differences between the stated reason for a meeting and the real reason, and provide you important tips for distinguishing the two and dealing with difficult situations (e.g., some one trying to sign you up for something) that may come up.
