Developing estimates is one of the most common and most vexing activities we face. Whether developing a budget for a project, forecasting revenues for a new service, or estimating how long it will take to complete something, staff and managers at all levels regularly have to figure out what "the right number" is. But training on how to do estimates is seldom offered....it often seems that the frequency with which we have to develop estimates is inversely proportional to the amount of training we receive. Consequently, developing estimates devolves down into a guessing game.
